Search tips

A quick search searches all fields. An advanced search allows a specific search of the following fields: author/editor, title/abstract, keywords and publication year.

Combination of search terms in one or more fields

ALL WORDS
Retrieves records containing all the terms entered. Search terms can be separated by a space and can be entered consecutively into the search box.
ANY WORD
Retrieves records which contain at least one of the given search terms. Where search results are very large, the search should be narrowed down.
EXACT PHRASE
Allows searching for an exact combination of words (e.g. compound words, sentences, citations …). The terms should be inserted between inverted commas.

Index lists / keywords

Index lists are only available in the advanced "Only world affairs online" search. A click on the button next to the search field opens an index on the right-hand side of the screen which contains a list of all the terms which can be searched in this field. Entering the first few characters of a search term and pressing Enter will open the list of terms at the corresponding part of the alphabet. Selected terms can transferred with a click to the search box. Terms consisting of more than one word will be automatically transferred as a phrase (in inverted commas).
It is also possible to search for specific terms by entering them in to the search box above the open index list.
