ALL WORDS
Retrieves records containing all the terms entered. Search terms can be separated
by a space and can be entered consecutively into the search box.
ANY WORD
Retrieves records which contain at least one of the given search terms. Where
search results are very large, the search should be narrowed down.
EXACT PHRASE
Allows searching for an exact combination of words (e.g. compound words,
sentences, citations
). The terms should be inserted between inverted commas.
Case sensitivity
A "Search all databases" search is not case-sensitive, i.e. the same results
will be found whether upper or lower case is used.
Umlauts and ß
It is not necessary to use umlauts (ö, ü, ä)), they will also
be found using o, u, a. Search terms can be entered using ß or
ss, the results will be the same.
Index lists / keywords
Index lists are only available in the advanced "Only world affairs online" search.
A click on the button next to the search field opens an index on the right-hand
side of the screen which contains a list of all the terms which can be searched
in this field. Entering the first few characters of a search term and
pressing Enter will open
the list of terms at the corresponding part of the alphabet. Selected terms can
transferred with a click to the search box. Terms consisting of more than
one word will be automatically transferred as a phrase (in inverted commas).
It is also possible to search for specific terms by entering them in to the
search box above the open index list.
Truncation
Truncation is the shortening of search terms to their stem using the
truncation symbol *. Results contain various grammatical forms / suffixes
/ prefixes of a word. For example,
liberal* will retrieve liberalism, liberality, liberalization, liberalise,
liberally
Date search
A date search narrows a search by restricting it to one or more years.
The dates can be entered in the following ways:
2007, 2006-2007, <2007, >2005.
